The late Silvano was the first bottler of Scotch whisky outside the UK, beginning in 1968. Some of the most famous and collectable whiskies in the world bear his name. After leaving his former whisky company in 2008 Silvano still wanted to exercise his passion, releasing Masam SRL in 2016. Sadly Silvano passed away in February 2017. Today his wife Maryse continues to bottle whiskies from casks that Silvano purchased under the name Masam SRL, a combination of their names. The company will cease when Silvano’s cask stocks are exhausted making this one of the world’s most collectable independent bottlings. Built in 1967 adjacent to the first operational Clynelish distillery which was built in 1819. In the 1960’s most of the Clynelish spirit was finding its way into blends so to meet demand they required a much larger facility. The two distilleries ran side by side and were known as Clynelish A and Clynelish B but after about a year the original distillery was closed. It was then reopened in 1969 due to the demand for peated whisky to make Johnnie Walker blends. This was due to Caol Ila distillery facing a drought and closed for a year for refurbishments. The original distillery was named Brora and boasted peated whisky to the strength of between 30-35 Phenol Parts per Million. Brora ran till 1983 but is not highly sought after. The Clynelish Distillery is still to this day one of the most essential whiskies going into the Johnnie Walker blends. This single malt whisky was distilled in 2004 at the Clynelish distillery. In 2021 it was bottled at 54.6% abv. It is from the last casks of the great Silvano and it is 1 of 292 bottles produced.
