Caledonian was, for several decades, the largest distillery in Scotland. It initially housed one Coffey still, which James Grant described as ‘the greatest still in Scotland’ in Old and New Edinburgh, Vol. 2 in 1882. In its day the distillery also produced an Irish style grain whiskey which was distilled in two large pot stills. In 1988 the distillery was closed and in 1998 the building was refurbished and renovated into flats. The 300ft chimney stack is all that remains of the original building which is one of the largest Victorian towers in Scotland today.
This cask strength single grain whisky was distilled at the Caledonian distillery before being placed in an Ex-Bourbon Hogshead Barrel and left to mature for 31 years. In May 2019 it was bottled at 50.2% abv as part of the Signatory Vintage cask strength collection. Only 249 bottles were produced for worldwide distribution.
