Formerly known as the Old Oscar Pepper Distillery and before that the Labrot & Graham Distillery. The Woodford Reserve Distillery sits eight miles from Versailles in Kentucky in the United States of America. The distillery was originally founded in 1812 and has had its operations halted a number of times through its long history. Registered on the National Register of Historic Places, and is designated as a National Historic Landmark for its well-preserved distillery architecture and its role in the development of the bourbon industry. Today the distillery produces mainly bourbon and rye with the addition of some wheat whiskey. There are also many limited releases each year using specially distilled spirit.
At Woodford it’s all about the wood used in maturation and where the wood has been sourced. Northern oak, Appalachian oak and Ozark oak, which have very different growing styles and conditions are adopted by the Woodford Distillery. This gives Woodford its unique flavour and recognisable aromas. Each year, the folks behind Woodford Reserve release an experimental whiskey as part of their Master’s Collection. For 2016, they produced a bourbon which has finished in American brandy casks. Has anyone else created this before? Bottled at 45.2% abv or 90.4 proof and offered in a distinctive 700ml bottle.
