The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. Now owned by the Edrington Group, The Macallan prides itself on its Six Pillars, which include its curiously small stills, very narrow ‘cut’ of new make spirit and exceptional cask management. It is the most sought after whisky for collectors, regularly setting records at auctions all round the world.
Macallan are not known for smokey whisky but sometimes there are exceptions to the normal rules. Made from a marriage of less than 100 casks which creates an expression full of rich peat smoke and sherry goodness. It is produced as an exclusive for Travel Retail and was launched in September 2015. Described as a “dark, smoky and unexpected” Macallan. Matured in 1st Fill Sherry Casks with no age statement and bottled at 48% abv.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Cigar smoke meets spice and black pepper. Big burst of Sherry goodness combines with berry jam and sticky date pudding.
Palate: Sticky date pudding, earthy and smokey.
Finish: Bonfire embers, chocolate orange and freshly grated ginger.
