James Eadie Ltd was founded by Rupert Patrick in 2016. Rupert is James Eadie’s great-great-grandson, who has held positions at Diageo, Beam and Ian Macleod Distillers. James Eadie founded a brewery in Burton-on-Trent in 1854, the same year he developed the Trade Mark X Scotch blend. The blend was extremely popular and was sold to Eadie’s chain of public houses throughout the 19th century. In 1933 James’s business was sold to Bass who continued producing the blend till 1947. The resurrection of the blend along with the structuring of the independent bottling company by Rupert means that James Eadie can be remembered again and his past work can be enjoyed once more. The James Eadie Independent bottling’s consist of cask strength selections from various Scottish distilleries. Each bottle describes the distillery, the abv and the date of distillation and bottling as well as the maturation technique.
The Glen Elgin Distillery is situated in the heart of Speyside approximately 3 miles south of Elgin. This distillery was the last distillery to be built during the boom years of the 1890s. The architect, Charles Doig, stated it would be the last one built in Speyside for 50 years. His prediction was remarkably accurate with Tormore being the next distillery built, in 1958. The original site was chosen for its water source and close proximity to the railway line. Unfortunately the water source proved unreliable and permission for a railway siding was refused. Until the 1950s the distillery was entirely operated and lit by paraffin. All machinery was driven by a paraffin engine and a water turbine. The distillery is owned by Diageo with the spirit still being a key component of White Horse blended whisky, exported to over 200 countries worldwide.
This single malt whisky was distilled at the Glen Elgin distillery in 2010 before being placed in First Fill Bourbon Barrels & Refill Hogsheads and left to mature for about 9 years. In 2020 it was bottled at 46% abv as part of the James Eadie Independent bottling ‘Small Batch’ range. Only 1161 bottles were produced.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Gorgeous notes of pine-lime ice creams and honey suckle blossoms. Crunchy nut cornflakes and warm vanilla caramel.
Palate: A soft and juicy beginning becomes lovely and waxy with flavours of lemon cream and yoyo biscuits. This is a whisky to drink with shortbread. Toasted sugars and almonds.
Finish: Finishes much the way it started, with subtle sugars and clean, well balanced timber character. Buttered toast with marmalade.
